ERIC EDUCATION REPORT

A brief narrative description of the journal article, document, or resource.
A preliminary survey of trainees' pre- and postrelease interactions with the State Employment Service (ES) was conducted by the Experimental Manpower Laboratory for Corrections (EMLC) as part of an overall evaluation of Manpower Development and Training (MDT) program effectiveness at Draper Correctional Center, Elmore, Alabama. Measures of the number and results of MDT trainees' interactions with ES offices before and after release from prison were made to determine the degree of effectiveness being achieved by ES personnel in securing training-related jobs for MDT trainees. Data were gathered from four sources: (1) the ES extension office records (at Draper) of 56 MDT trainees and an interview with the ES counselor stationed at Draper, (2) records of 41 MDT trainees (73% of the study group) released to the service areas of 13 ES field offices located throughout Alabama and interviews with office managers or responsible personnel in these offices, (3) postrelease interviews of 16 MDT trainees which had already been accomplished in connection with EMLC Objective 3, and (4) additional telephone interviews with 10 of those 16 MDT trainees. Results showed that the ES Draper Extension Office had placed 18 (32%) of the 56 MDT trainees in training-related jobs; 14 (25%) of them reported to work and 7 (13%) were still employed on those initial jobs at the time of the study. The 13 ES field offices placed 5 (12%) of the 41 MDT trainees released to their areas in training-related jobs. (Author)
Identifying your selling points to begin marketing yourself.
Write a list.

It's best to get it all onto paper so you can sit down and look over it afterwards (and use it to write your CV). There is no point in knowing in your head what you are good at. So write a list.

Your selling points, or strengths are what you will be judged on (you also have to use them to overshadow your weaknesses).

Selling points are ideally unique, but you need to cover the basics that most employers look for (e.g. communication skills, team player, reliable, etc - you've probably seen all that stuff on job adverts). So use these basic skills as a starting point.

When you've got the basics out of the way, you need to concentrate on your unique skills. What sets you apart from the crowd? Why should the employer hire you over the hundreds of other candidates? What are your strengths?
Md Mahboob Alam PGDM I

You get that by being:
A good worker who's willing and eager to learn and has a lot of enthusiasm for the job.
Be willing to do more than you are being paid to do. Help others in higher positions with their job, and you'll learn how to do their job. This is a great way to boost your experience.
A reliable employee who they can count on to be there every day and ON TIME.
An employee who gets along with his co-workers.
An honest employee who doesn't steal or lie to his employer.
An employee who knows that the customers of the business are where your paycheck really comes from and making sure to treat them with respect and enthusiasm.
And always try to leave a company on good terms, so that you can use them as a reference.

Job experience
They all wanted job experience. So I went back to all the managers I'd talked to about the bartending school, and asked them if they'd train me - for free. I offered a proposition: "I'll come in on my own time. You don't have to pay me. I will train for free. Train me, and if you like my work, then you can hire me with pay."

For them, it was a win-win situation. They didn't lose any money by giving me a chance. And if I did real well and showed an aptitude for the job, they could then hire me and we'd both make out.

Vikas Kumar Azad PGDM III

Beating the System
We've all heard it: "You can't get a job if you don't have experience, but how do you get experience if no-one will give you a job?". Doesn't seem fair, does it? Some kids are lucky. They've got an uncle or brother or cousin who can pull a few strings for them. Once they're in, they can say they've got that magical stuff called "job experience" that every boss looks for. Some kids are so smart. You know the type. They skip grades in school and all the colleges are begging for them. They're too busy being smart to be cool. They really make an impression on potential bosses, and they get hired. Then there are the kids who find underhanded ways to make money. They don't want a real job. They usually look pretty cool driving around in big fancy cars flashing wads of money. They don't look so cool years later sitting in a jail cell. And finally, there's the rest of us. We walk into one personnel office after another, filling out job applications. By the time you're finished, you've memorized your Social Security number for life. They all say the same thing: "We'll let you know."

Only they don't. You never hear from them again. There is a way to beat the system. It's a pretty ingenious solution, too! But you've got to want it. What I wanted was to be a bartender, but my idea will work for almost any job. It started when I signed up for a bartending school. The contract gave me three days to change my mind and cancel. In those three days, I went around to different bars and asked the managers if they'd hire someone who'd gone to this school. They all said no, not if the person didn't have any real-life job experience.

Telephone Interviews

Given the cost of travel, a growing number of information organizations use telephone interviews to filter finalists before inviting a few [usually three] for an interview. The interviewer may be a single individual or a group. Because of the nature of the telephone, this type of interview requires some special preparation.
Keep a summary version of your employer research file as well as the details in an easily scanned folder. Be aware that you won't have much time to search for information while you're on the phone. Also have your cover letter and resume easily available. You should have two pens and sheets of paper so that you can easily make notes. Water should be available.
Consider where you will interview. Select a place where distractions -- noise, pets, children, others, TVs, stereos -- can be minimized. Depending on your situation, a land line may provide clearer communication than a cell phone. If you use a cell phone, be certain that you can receive a strong signal.
Although the interviewers cannot see you, it's best to treat the interview as a business experience so you're showered, alert.... Wear comfortable clothing. This is serious so no bunny slippers.
Telephone interviews place a premium on quality listening skills. It's helpful to take notes as others speak. When you speak, talk slowly enough to be clearly understood. Use professional language and be thoughtful and measured in your comments. It's OK to pause briefly as you collect your thoughts, but briefly. Be honest if you don't know or don't understand. You may ask for a clarification or for the question to be repeated -- but not too often.

Presentations:In The Interview

In many information agencies, it is customary for the candidate to make some sort of a presentation before a group as part of the interview situation. Ask if this will be true in your situation. If it is, be certain that you understand how much time is available, the nature of the audience, and the purpose of the presentation. The presentation should be specifically designed to meet the audience needs and interests. If you will be using ANY information technology, verify the availability of hardware and software. Let your host know your hardware/software requirements and how much setup time you will need before your presentation.
Always take manual backup material in case something doesn't work. Often, something will not work! Make your presentation as interesting and as interactive as possible. DO NOT look at the slides and present your back to your audience. DO NOT have 57 slides each crowded with bulleted items. Do limit slides to three to five bullets and no more than five words for each. The presentation needs to be clean, clear, and focused. It is a summary of something interesting and important. It is NOT a detailed research presentation. A common error is including too much content and then rushing toward the end.
Eye contact and interactivity with the audience are especially important. Your body language should be welcoming and positive -- even relaxed. Do use gestures. Walk around a bit.
If a question and answer session follows, provide relatively brief but focused responses to questions. Don't be afraid to say that you don't know or are uncertain. You can't know everything. However do consider that sort of questions that might be asked about your presentation.
The presentation will be evaluated as evidence of your knowledge and comfort level with technology, your ability to deal with the unexpected, and your speaking/teaching effectiveness. It is a major moment.
While presentations are not a major concern for many search committees, they are especially important for public service positions. Most search committees understand that a presentation in a strange place with strange equipment that does not always go well.

good morning

Tradesmen International is recognized as America’s premier source for high-caliber craftsmen in all trades. Yet, it’s the consultative side of our business that is getting significant consideration by contractors and industrial businesses during the current economic downturn.

As a Construction Labor Support company, the proven labor management solutions and services we provide will help you limit economic impacts to your business right now. And, we can show you – in hard numbers – why running a lean workforce should not be a reaction to the recession, but your normal way of operating your business. This is something we’ve proven to top contractors nationally for more than 17 years. Click here to learn more.

Seven tips to take control of our life

1. Get in touch with values:When we feel like we are working hard but not getting anywhere it is probably because our priorities are not aligned with our values. begin identifying values by asking these questions.

2. Decide what motivates you:
Is there something you are passionate about but are afraid of trying? If tomorrow you knew you could do anything and not fail what would you do? To start, write down the types of activities you like to do and the types of activities (hobbies) that make you feel good when you do them? What are your special skills and talents? Don't be shy? Usually if it's something we like to do we are probably good at it. What inspires you?
3. Set your Goals:
In order to get what you really want you must start by setting goals. Goals fuel your intent and make your desires concrete. Start by writing the goals for this year in area of personal relationships, work, health, finances and spirituality. List five goals in each category (add more categories if you like). Then break them down into monthly and then weekly goals. Focusing on what you intend in your life will bring it to reality. You create your life? So start now by setting your goals.
4. Take planned Action:
Having goals ins mind without action is worthless .Write long term goals and short term goals and prioritized them, have a plan of action. Take one step at a time and do something everyday that takes you closer to where you want to be. Remember to live in the present and be thankful for what you have now, enjoying the journey toward your goals.
5. Time management.
We all have the same amount of time to use in a day. Some people do a lot while others do very little? We can have complete control of how much time we spend productively and how much we waste. Plan your days and prioritize your time to get the most out of the time you have. Use time-wasters like standing in line or waiting in a doctor's office to catch up on reading or something else that is important to you.
6. Do what needs to be done:
Whether it is a mundane task or internal work, putting it off gets us nowhere. You are either going forward or falling behind; there is no such thing as standing still. Do what has to be done to get to where you want to go. Sometimes when we work on ourselves we stop when we get to a place that we need to change. Change can be difficult when we have to step out of our comfort zone. The more change is needed the more difficult it is.
7. Self-discipline:
elf-discipline is the final step that takes all that we have learned and puts it into action. Self discipline is a trait that for most of us has to be developed. To reach our goals we must visualize them as already being accomplished and have faith that we can reach them. Self discipline come easily when we believe in and trust ourselves and have enough desire, self-discipline comes easily.

ACADEMIC PROJECTS

It is “Academic Project” season in most of the Indian colleges and also a thoughtful time for the students. The scenario is clear to most of the students as they know they have to complete the project at any COST. Academic projects these days are more or less about getting things done as soon as possible and with the least effort involved. TF looks into the facts and significance of the academic projects.
Academic Projects
Academic project is a matter of concern and a cause of worry for most of students and that could be the reason why students tend to choose the most common and undisputedly the easiest of the projects. What they fail to understand is that the academic projects are to enable them to understand the know-how about the real world. These projects should be considered as one of the major areas of students. This academic project should also demonstrate the application of skills, knowledge of the discipline to solving a problem representative of the type to be encountered at the professional level and above all the enthusiasm to get things done positively and innovatively.
The Scenario Today
Starting from September till March, is usually the project time for all BTech, MCA, BCA, MSC and CS students. And everybody is busy with either completing their project for their academic purpose or just completing their final semester hurdle. Most of the students are not aware about the importance, advantages and the requirements of the academic projects as it is considered to be a hurdle and not a learning experience. The sadder picture is the fact that most of the students tend to submit project that isn’t their effort instead someone else’s project, about which he or she would have a basic idea about, as part of their academic project. This is indeed an easy job done but this would surely backfire once you know the importance of the academic project in one’s career.
“My academic project was based on DOT Net and fortunately I took my projects seriously and I learnt a lot during the course of my project. During the early days of my job that helped me a lot because I knew what it was all about” said Ashish Mahajan. There are projects available for lump sum money but what you fail to get is the experience and the knowledge that will help you grow throughout your career.
Being Thoughtful
Many national and international universities promote and sponsor worthy projects. These projects develop into different kinds of functional commercial products, potential applications or both. The developments of such projects are possible through a holistic approach. Most students start thinking about their project only during the year they need to submit the project. Quality projects are built through long term planning and preparations. Each year of study should have an impact in the way one thinks therefore plans for the project.
According to Clarence A K, Head of the Innovations Lab “Select a relevant topic, make sure that you are using the latest technology, industry tools and always be innovative”.
So it is not just important to be thoughtful but at the same time it is important that the projects are chosen efficiently. According Biju Jacob, Director- Logic Software Solutions “Every student must take care while selecting the project. He or she should decide which career track they would opt for and accordingly choose the topic. Always ensure that your academic project is career oriented. Also know the technologies and select the one which is relevant”
Process and Documentation
Most of the students are not aware about the importance of proper documentation and process. In the case of industry projects they are giving equal importance to the documentation and process. The process involves following proper project management strategies. For e.g. Before the project starts you should have to prepare a Requirement Analysis Document, and then based on that a Software Requirement Specification (SRS) should be created, if any change is required. have to apply proper change management methods. The coding part should have proper coding standards and comments etc.
“ln the case of our projects, we are utilizing more than 30% of our billable hours for process and documentation” Says Aarathi Gopal of Cognizant Technology Solutions. Be ensures that your projects follows proper process and documentation.
Change is Needed
There is a tendency among students to grab a subject and work on it without thinking about what, when and how they are going to pursue it. A change has to be brought in, in terms of understanding the project and also about how you are going to pursue it. A clear understanding about the project would be a great help in completing it within the time frame and with a possible greater success rate. Most of the students are facing difficulties in identifying a good idea. In the current scenario, it is advisable to look for a project which has more commercial value with it. Understand the business/functional scenarios with different industry; find out a good requirement for those scenarios. Once the requirement is mapped brain storm your idea with the experts. Once you have identified a good idea, do proper financial analysis before finalizing the idea. You can approach any company or institution for their guidance on your proposed projects.
The colleges should also care to take this initiative to make the students understand the importance of choosing a better project and at the same time guide them through the project completion. Kenny Jacob, former CTO of the much acclaimed student startup Torque talks about the kind of care an educational institution should take in order to produce good academic projects. “A drastic change is needed in the existing scenario. Students must be provided with reasonable time, proper technical expertise and support, otherwise the students may go for paid projects that are readily available in the market. lf the students seek the help of any institutions; don’t compromise in the quality of projects. Make sure it is of high quality from the synopsis and other specifications”.

Tips on Dressing for a Job Interview - Your interview attire is more important than you think so let your talent and personality get you noticed, not your wild tie or brightly colored socks. The right clothes give you an opportunity to make the right impression. I have outlined 4 important tips on dressing for a job interview.
FragranceOn the day of our interview, before you even begin to get dressed, there is one thing you should avoid. You may be tempted to follow your normal routine of splashing your favorite cologne or aftershave on after you hop out of the shower. Don’t do it for your interview, you don’t want to overwhelm the interviewer. They may not like your fragrance as much as you do.
What to Wear. . .To a more formal interview: It helps to know how formal the company you will be interviewing with is and if wearing a suit is necessary. I hate to state the obvious, but it is important to go in a suit and tie to any company that's part of a more formal industry, such as banking, law or brokerage. Choose a basic black, dark gray or navy suit. Also opt for black leather lace-up shoes and a black belt. Blue shirts are a great choice since they compliment most skin tones and easily coordinate with most suit colors. Choose a flattering tie that goes well with both the suit and shirt you have chosen.
To a less formal interview: Some less formal industries such as software development and technology companies will not require a suit. However, it's better to wear something a little nicer than what everyone in the office is wearing. So choose something dressy but casual. Such ensembles might include pressed khakis or trousers, a well pressed button-down shirt, and of course some sort of nice looking dress shoe and matching belt. You may even want to thrown on a blazer. Navy blazers look great with khaki pants.
Shoes and BeltsPay attention to details such as matching your belt to the color of your shoes. Choose black shoes if your outfit consists of dark gray, navy, brown or black. Opt for dark brown shoes if you'll be wearing tans or medium toned colors. I hate to sound like your mother, but polish or clean your shoes before your interview. Scuff marks on your shoes make you look tattered, and we can't have that.
AccessoriesKeep interview accessories minimal and professional. Use some sort of bound portfolio to carry your resume, references or other papers. Men should limit jewelry to a wristwatch and cufflinks if you wear them. Earrings, necklaces, nose rings, and such are not interview material (for the man who wants the job anyway). Whatever the type of industry, men should wear jewelry sparingly.

PLACEMENT

"Think of a catchy title; something that will spark people's interest." In my search for something "catchy," this title - "Advanced Placement Geography: El Dorado or Pandora's Box?" - popped into my mind. As I told Barbara at the time, I really was not sure what it meant, but I thought it had a nice ring to it. As the time for this Annual Meeting drew nearer, I decided I had better find out more about the legends behind these familiar names. So I would like to begin by sharing with you what I learned.

Experience & Employment :-
Placements can be in a wide range of industry ranging from the large blue-chip companies to smaller companies as well as companies in all parts of the world. Placement officers will ensure that the students receive good work experience whilst on placement and that they receive formal visits from academic staff members to check on progress. Often an industrial placement leads to a highly relevant and challenging final year project, possible sponsorship and sometimes the offer of permanent employment. Some employers view the industrial placement as a year long interview!

Looking for a job in India can be very much eased by using the help of a placement agency. As India’s job sector is in continuous expansion, you will need to keep up to date with the latest news and job opportunities in order to find a good job – there are lots of well trained people looking for the same thing as you are. In this economical context the help of a good placement agency is invaluable.

Of course you don’t necessarily need to use the services of a
job placement agency if you are highly trained and you feel confident you can always compete for well paid jobs in let’s say the information technology sector. Nevertheless, you will need to stay in touch with the latest information and always know which big companies are looking for people with your specific knowledge, skills, and background.

If you are considering the services of such a job placement agency in India, and this is a very wise decision, you need to know that not all of these agencies offer top drawer services so you really need to keep an eye open and avoid those companies that offer poor services and in fact slow you down in your job seeking Endeavour.

Luckily you can easily spot the smaller and frankly useless job placement agencies and you should always choose the placement companies that have a good reputation and a long history of successful presence on the
job market. Multinational companies such as Manpower and others similar won’t disappoint you and there are many other trustworthy job placement companies like Egon Zehnder and Stanton Chase that have a good reputation and could help you find a job. Whether you will be searching for a job in India on your own or you will use the services of a well reputed India job placement agency, the most important thing is to always stay focused on what it is you are looking for and have all the industry news at your disposal. Optimism and confidence are sure to keep you on the path to securing a good job in India.

INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENT

This scenario emphasises the vital importance of a good industrial placement as an integral part of an engineering degree. There is no doubt that students who do not undergo an industrial placement are less likely to find employment than those with industrial experience.

Commonly, universities leave the task of finding an industrial placement entirely to the student. The consequence of this is that the student is poorly prepared to make a job application and, in the event of an interview, is not able to present themself in the best light. Also, because many companies have built up long-term relationships with specific universities the individual applicant will often simply not be considered.

The solution to this problem lies in your careful selection of your university. Some universities approach the placement of students in industry in a highly serious and efficient manner. These universities employ full-time industrial placement officers whose task it is to assist the students in finding high-grade and challenging industrial placements. Also assistance can be given in preparation of job applications and in improvement of interview techniques.

Experience & Employment
These placements can be in a wide range of industry ranging from the large blue-chip companies to smaller companies as well as companies in all parts of the world.

Earning & Learning
An additional bonus of the industrial placement is the opportunity to earn some extra money whilst continuing with your academic career by. You will also interpret your final year degree subjects in a different way as a result of your industrial placement.
So if the objective of your studies at university is to obtain a good well-paid job after the successful completion of your degree then the sensible route to take is via a sandwich degree with a high quality industrial placement.

STRATEGIES IN RECRUITMENT

SRATEGIC DECISION MAKING
Business Intelligence tools are useful for mapping software talent across geographies, particularly when a company wants to make the strategic decision of setting up a development centre and needs local talent. “It enables an organisation to pick the right city and create an infrastructure compatible with the availability. This is only possible when the company possesses intelligence that gives it a good idea of availability,” states Sinha. He adds that BI can be exceptionally useful in building potential pipelines for skills that are difficult to hire. A good recruiter needs to have a reasonable map of pools of talent across a city, company-wise and experience-wise. “In fact as an organisation we have mapped the entire software population of India across skills, companies and cities. We have a fair idea of how many people are available with which skill in which company and in which location. This map enables us to be able to target specific locations for a certain skill and quickly turn around relevant profiles,” informs Sinha.
FUTURE WAVE
BI in hiring is all set to become a wave which will immensely benefit larger organisations and change the recruitment scenario in times to come. “The current trend is a fire-fighting exercise. The industry will mature, and perhaps two years own the line, it will be more meaningful,” opines Nirupama V G. She believes that in future, data analysis will have a significant impact on the hiring process. It will throw light on where to recruit from, what kind of timeframe companies need to budget for while acquiring talent with different skill-sets and so on.
Sinha concedes that BI is being applied to the sourcing side of the business to some degree, especially in the IT recruitment space. “This will accelerate in the current year as hiring will become more dependent on a company’s ability to harness intelligence data, and it will change IT recruitment in the next few years by making it more process- and systems-driven as compared to now.” Further, it will help hiring managers to make their decisions based on some factual inputs. All in all, it will be about getting the right candidate at the right time at the lowest possible cost

BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE IN RECRUITMENT

IT recruitment is caught in a paradoxical situation. On the one hand companies are eager to induct new hires, while on the other the right candidate often proves elusive. On the other hand, hundreds (even thousands) of hopefuls who have sent in their particulars wait anxiously for an interview call. The twain seldom meet to their mutual satisfaction.
Data analysis can go a long way in making the hiring process faster and more efficient. This is where the application of business intelligence (BI) has a considerable impact on the hiring process.
BI relates to the tools and systems that play a key role in the strategic planning process of an organisation by gathering, storing and accessing data. Traditionally used by companies to solve problems related to distribution, sales, marketing and logistics, the next step is to use BI to supercharge the hiring process.

Bangalore-based Headhunters India has been using an in-house-developed proprietary BI tool for the last two years. Says Kris Lakshmikanth, its founder and managing director, “Search or recruitment companies like ours conduct recruitment day-in and day-out. In December, we generated over 250 offers with an average CTC of over Rs 3.5 lakh.” As a rule of thumb, Headhunters India would have to meet 5,000 people in order to make 250 offers. To meet 5,000 people, its team would have gone through 20,000 biodatas. “This is a massive task anytime, so BI tools are useful to us,” says Lakshmikanth. For executive search companies, whose earnings are solely dependent on the joining of the candidate, the BI tool is vital for converting offers into hires.
BI can help recruiters:
Identify cities, companies or media from where they can recruit talent.
Find the right recruitment company to partner with.
Pick the college campuses that must be targeted.
Experts agree that the hiring process can be made more efficient by analysing data regarding existing employees to create a hiring profile. An organisation also needs to know the right mix of skills needed to achieve its business goals. Nirupama V G, executive vice-president, TeamLease Services, points out that some employers use data mining techniques to understand the characteristics of their top performers. “By understanding the characteristics of this group and rating them on parameters such as education, years of experience, skills and personality traits, a hiring profile can be established to recruit individuals who possess similar characteristics,” she says, adding that while this technique has been used many times, one must realise that the profiling is based on historical data which may not always successfully indicate who will be a top performers in the future as changes in social, economic and environmental conditions can throw a spanner in the works.

research and training

In my opinion, placement research is sometimes more important than doing keyword research in order to create highly effective Adwords Content Network campaigns.
In a previous post on this site, I discussed why you should separate search network and content network campaigns from one another when running pay per click marketing campaigns with Google Adwords. This audio is an extension of that post and I also plan to add more content on this blog pertaining to this subject because I have been receiving a number of requests for people who really want to find out more about how to become more successful advertising on the content network.
I also discuss two tools on this audio to help you with placement targeting research. One is called Content Bully and the other one is Adsense Finder. You can click the link to find out more information about Adsense Finder. To find out more about Content Bully, click here.
I encourage you to leave any questions or comments to let me know how you feel about this information and/or if you want more about this subject.
